Meet our Mentee Kitchen: Joyfull Greens

Posted Wednesday 5th March 2025...

Meet Frédie from Joyfull Greens, a community cookery school based in Godalming, Surrey, who focus on plant-based nutrition and creating a space where people can cook and eat together.

Why did you want to set up your own community cooking school? Why is it important to you?

I’ve been a teacher for over two decades, and over time, I’ve seen more and more people, both staff and students, struggling with mental health issues and poor diets. I often saw students feeling sluggish after lunch because they were eating unhealthy foods. I wanted to do more than just teach. I wanted to bring people together and provide a space for them to learn how to cook healthy meals, share food, and combat social isolation. Food has always been a source of joy for me, and I wanted to share that joy with others.

How has the process been so far?

It has been great, we’ve already held a couple of trial classes. One was in November with potential volunteers, and then in December, we held two more. In one, we made a Gambian peanutbutter stew and in another, we made gyoza. These trial sessions were great, and the participants really enjoyed the experience.

When will the school open?

We aim to start this spring. We’re in the process of securing funding from the local borough in Surrey, which will give us a great start. We’ve also found a potential venue for community classes, and we’re excited to start engaging with the local community soon.

How did you find out about Made In Hackney?

I discovered Made In Hackney by listening to a podcast with Sarah Bentley, where she discussed the importance of community kitchens. I had been looking for a way to combine plant-based nutrition with helping others, and the idea of cooking and eating together really resonated with me.

How has Global Plant Kitchens helped you set up your school?

Global Plant Kitchens has been incredibly supportive. I sent a simple email, and within a few hours, I received a reply. They were eager to chat and provided weekly support, which helped me set up the school and take the next steps.
